Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes looked on course for a very strong showing at the Spielberg circuit in qualifying, but crashes from both drivers brought a premature end to their sessions.
The laptimes from earlier in qualifying suggested Hamilton could challenge the Red Bull and Ferrari pairing, though he will ultimately start down in 10th position.
Mercedes will look to recover tomorrow, with the Sprint race weekend providing two opportunities to make up for their mistakes, as the 7-time Champion told the press:
"Incredibly disappointed in myself, ultimately and so sorry to the team. Everyone worked so hard to put this car together and I never like to bring it back damaged.
We'll fight for [the] top three I think. I don't have an answer for it [the crash]. I just lost the back end in turn 7 and that was that.
I am encouraged, for sure, to see our performance.
We didn't expect to be as close as that today, so that's a huge positive from the team.
But I'm really quite far back. I don't know what's possible from there, but we have a Sprint race as well so I hope that tomorrow we can make up for the lost time."
