Alpha Tauri has confirmed Pierre Gasly will continue with the team in 2023, as has been speculated in recent weeks.

The Frenchman was already contracted to stay with the team until 2023, but there were suggestions that the 26-year-old could leave the Red Bull setup for another team.

However, Franz Tost told the media in Canada that Gasly's continuation with the team was a "100%" certainty, so this news is of little surprise.

Whilst some have argued that another year with Alpha Tauri is a sideways step for Gasly, there are very few realistic openings in the market this year, and even then his options are not especially attractive.

Spending 2023 with Alpha Tauri as he evaluates his options, observing how the driver market evolves, could be a better option than rushing out prematurely.

Pierre Gasly has given his thoughts:

"I have been with this team for five years now and I am proud of the journey we’ve been through together and the progress we have made.

I’m happy to remain with my Scuderia AlphaTauri team. This year’s new regulations have created new challenges for us and being able to plan our development with the team for the next 18 months is a good working basis for the future."

Franz Tost also expressed his satisfaction with the news:

"We are really pleased to confirm that Pierre stays with us in 2023.He is definitely in the group of the best and most competitive drivers in F1 and has proven his abilities during all the time he has spent with us.

Undoubtedly, Pierre can play a major role in the team having a successful season next year and it will be down to us to provide him with a competitive car, so that he can continue to deliver excellent results."
